[2501.03998v1] Tracing the Winds: A Uniform Interpretation of Helium Escape in Exoplanets from Archival Spectroscopic Observations

Patrick McCreery, Leonardo A. Dos Santos, Néstor Espinoza, Romain Allart, James Kirk

1/7/2025

Over the past decade, observations of evaporating exoplanets have become increasingly common, driven by the discovery of the near-infrared helium-triplet line as a powerful probe of atmospheric escape. This process significantly influences the evolution of exoplanets, particularly those smaller than Jupiter. Both theoretical and observational studies have aimed to determine how efficiently exoplanets convert their host star's X-ray and ultraviolet (XUV) radiation into atmospheric mass loss. In this study, we employ the open-source atmospheric escape model p-winds to systematically analyze all publicly available helium triplet spectroscopic detections related to exoplanetary atmospheric escape. Our findings indicate that the retrieved outflows strongly depend on the ratio of XUV flux to planetary density ($F_{\text{XUV}}/\rho_p$), supporting the theoretical framework of energy-limited mass loss. We constrain population-level photoevaporative efficiencies to $0.34 \pm 0.13$ and $0.75 \pm 0.21$ for hydrogen-helium fractions of $0.90$ and $0.99$, respectively. These results offer new insights into exoplanetary atmospheric evolution and will aid future studies on exoplanet population demographics.

[2501.03996v1] Modular Features of Superstring Scattering Amplitudes: Generalised Eisenstein Series and Theta Lifts

Daniele Dorigoni, Michael B. Green, Congkao Wen

1/7/2025

In previous papers it has been shown that the coefficients of terms in the large-$N$ expansion of a certain integrated four-point correlator of superconformal primary operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are rational sums of real-analytic Eisenstein series and "generalised Eisenstein series''. The latter are novel modular functions first encountered in the context of graviton amplitudes in type IIB superstring theory. Similar modular functions, known as two-loop modular graph functions, are also encountered in the low-energy expansion of the integrand of genus-one closed superstring amplitudes. In this paper we further develop the mathematical structure of such generalised Eisenstein series emphasising, in particular, the occurrence of $L$-values of holomorphic cusp forms in their Fourier mode decomposition. We show that both the coefficients in the large-$N$ expansion of the integrated correlator and two-loop modular graph functions admit a unifying description in terms of four-dimensional lattice sums generated by theta lifts of local Maass functions, which generalise the structure of real-analytic Eisenstein series. Through the theta lift representation, we demonstrate that elements belonging to these two families of non-holomorphic modular functions can be expressed as rational linear combinations of generalised Eisenstein series for which all the $L$-values of holomorphic cusp forms precisely cancel.

[2501.03992v1] NeuralSVG: An Implicit Representation for Text-to-Vector Generation

Sagi Polaczek, Yuval Alaluf, Elad Richardson, Yael Vinker, Daniel Cohen-Or

1/7/2025

Vector graphics are essential in design, providing artists with a versatile medium for creating resolution-independent and highly editable visual content. Recent advancements in vision-language and diffusion models have fueled interest in text-to-vector graphics generation. However, existing approaches often suffer from over-parameterized outputs or treat the layered structure - a core feature of vector graphics - as a secondary goal, diminishing their practical use. Recognizing the importance of layered SVG representations, we propose NeuralSVG, an implicit neural representation for generating vector graphics from text prompts. Inspired by Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs), NeuralSVG encodes the entire scene into the weights of a small MLP network, optimized using Score Distillation Sampling (SDS). To encourage a layered structure in the generated SVG, we introduce a dropout-based regularization technique that strengthens the standalone meaning of each shape. We additionally demonstrate that utilizing a neural representation provides an added benefit of inference-time control, enabling users to dynamically adapt the generated SVG based on user-provided inputs, all with a single learned representation. Through extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations, we demonstrate that NeuralSVG outperforms existing methods in generating structured and flexible SVG.

[2501.03982v1] Sequentializing a Test: Anytime Validity is Free

Nick W. Koning, Sam van Meer

1/7/2025

An anytime valid sequential test permits us to peek at observations as they arrive. This means we can stop, continue or adapt the testing process based on the current data, without invalidating the inference. Given a maximum number of observations $N$, one may believe that this benefit must be paid for in terms of power when compared to a conventional test that waits until all $N$ observations have arrived. Our key contribution is to show that this is false: for any valid test based on $N$ observations, we derive an anytime valid sequential test that matches it after $N$ observations. In addition, we show that the value of the sequential test before a rejection is attained can be directly used as a significance level for a subsequent test. We illustrate this for the $z$-test. There, we find that the current state-of-the-art based on log-optimal $e$-values can be obtained as a special limiting case that replicates a $z$-test with level $\alpha \to 0$ as $N \to \infty$.

[2501.03974v1] Characterizing perfectoid covers of abelian varieties

Rebecca Bellovin, Hanlin Cai, Sean Howe, Tongmu He

1/7/2025

We give a simple characterization of all perfectoid profinite \'{e}tale covers of abelian varieties in terms of the Hodge-Tate filtration on the $p$-adic Tate module. We also compute the geometric Sen morphism for all profinite $p$-adic Lie torsors over an abelian variety, and combine this with our characterization to prove a conjecture of Rodr\'{i}guez Camargo on perfectoidness of $p$-adic Lie torsors in this case. We obtain complementary results for covers of semi-abeloid varieties, $p$-divisible rigid analytic groups, and varieties with globally generated 1-forms. Our proof of perfectoidness for covers of abelian varieties is based on results of Scholze on the canonical subgroup and holds for an arbitrary abelian variety over an algebraically closed non-archimedean extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. In an appendix authored by Tongmu He, an alternate proof is presented in the case of abelian varieties that can be defined over a discretely valued subfield by combining our computation of the geometric Sen morphism with previous pointwise perfectoidness and purity of perfectoidness results of He.
